About the Knights of Columbus at American University
The AU Council began when six young men received their first degree in May 2006. We were guided and supported by our brothers at the George Washington University Council #13242 and in Spring 2009 we were formally presented our independent charter as American University Council #14465! We welcome interest from new practicing Catholic men in the AU community. If you want fun, fellowship and faith, then the AU Knights of Columbus Council is for you!
Who are the Knights?
The Knights of Columbus is a Catholic men's fraternal benefit society formed in 1881 by Father Michael J. McGivney in New Haven, Connecticut. Its original purpose was to render financial and spiritual aid to members and their families. Today, the Knights still serve that important purpose while carrying out Christ's mission of charity inside and outside the Church. Knights fundraise to fight mental illness, volunteer with the Special Olympics, promote pro-life causes, and fund the satellite uplink for the Holy Father's annual Christmas address. The Knights are often called, "The Strong Right Arm of the Church". There are more than 12,000 councils and 1.7 million Knights in the United States, Canada, the Philippines, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, Panama, Guatemala, Guam, Saipan, and the Virgin Islands. In Washington, D.C., college councils also thrive at Catholic University of America, Georgetown University, George Washington University, Howard University, and the University of Maryland.
Who can become a Knight of Columbus?
Membership in the Knights of Columbus is open to practicing Catholic men in union with the Holy See, who are at least 18 years old. A practicing Catholic is one who lives up to the Commandments of God and the precepts of the Church.
Members are then instructed in the teachings of the Order in four scripted and solemn ceremonies, called degrees. These four degrees impart upon the member the core virtues of Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism.
What is a College Council?
Knights who are members of College Councils are full members of the order and are entitled to all the benefits of membership. College Councils are simply Councils that are located on college or university campuses. Currently there are more than 16,000 college Knights in 160 College Councils.
